On the edge of everyday life. The popularity of the window motif in the coronavirus epidemic

Kamila Bednarz

Abstract

During the time of national quarantine and isolation, characteristic of the coronavirus epidemic, the window became the only direct link between people locked in their homes and the outside world. This motif, eagerly taken up to express longing for the lost everyday life, also became a form of exchange for the new community affected by the crisis. The analysis of the action initiated by Gabrielle Thierry, Sketch your window, shows the essence of art in times of crisis, its therapeutic value and possibilities of expressing experiences. The works created during this period treat the motif of the window in a variety of ways, showing the multiplicity of emotions and strategies of coping with the crisis. The window sometimes appears as an "impassable border", and sometimes we do not even notice its presence. However, all these works are connected with perceptible loneliness.
